Svalbard

Winter 2009

My first visit on Svalbard was in February 2009. When I arrived the sun had just begun to reach above the horizon at mid day but as Longyearbyen is in a northward facing valley it still couldn't be seen in town. During the five weeks that I stayed on I thus got to experience both the mid-winter darkness and the return of the sun with the celebration of Solfestuka.
